As well as the comfortable surroundings in the towns, the region boasts many beautiful and spectacular natural attractions to delight the visitor. The Wombeyan Caves, Mt Gibraltar and the Fitzroy Falls are some of the best known of these attractions.

The Southern Highlands community has raised around $220,000 for cancer after locals walked thousands of laps of Eridge Park oval in the Cancer Council's Relay for Life.

The provisional fundraising figure was announced at the end of the marathon walking effort on Sunday morning, and local organisers believe the sum may be a record total for a Relay for Life event held in NSW.

Relay for Life event co-ordinator Harriet Goodall said the Southern Highlands community had put in a phenomenal effort to raise funds for the cause, with some teams raising $10,000 for the event.

She also praised the efforts of teams, who walked for 24 hours around the 420m track at Eridge Park oval for the relay.
