Mount Isa owes its existence to Mount Isa Mine, the world's largest single producer of copper, silver, lead and zinc. In 1923, John Campbell Miles found a silver at Mt. Isa. Miles pegged two leases and soon 500 were filled. Mount Isa Mines took over operations in 1924. This rich deposit is still classed as one of the world's great mines.

Mount Isa is the largest and most impressive township in western Queensland. Unlike Longreach (its only competitor), which has a very rural feel, Mount Isa is a mining town with an air of self-confidence and sophistication which is rare in outback Queensland. Thus, although the mining complex is the town's raison d'etre and though it dominates the skyline and the local economy, Mount Isa does not feel like a settlement nestling under 'dark satanic mills'. It is a centre with high quality accommodation, good restaurants, excellent facilities, and enough activities to keep even the most enthusiastic visitor busy for a week.

Located 1829 km from Brisbane, 883 km from Townsville and 356 m above sea-level, Mount Isa proudly claims to be the largest city in the world; a fact born out by its accreditation in the Guinness Book of Records. The argument is that the city extends for 40 977 sq. km, and that the road from Mount Isa to Camooweal, a distance of 189 km, is the longest city road in the world.

Mount Isa has grown from strength to strength over the years but the harsh picturesque landscape has barely changed, becoming one of the main draw-cards for visitors each year. Mount Isa brings out the adventurous spirit in everyone, with ample places to fish, camp, four wheel drive, or relax and enjoy an Outback sunset. The rugged terrain is a four wheel driver's haven, and visitors can explore the region just as the pioneers of the region did many years ago.

Mt Isa is a mining town, which mines for copper, lead, silver and zinc, and has got a nickname by locals as 'The Isa'. Today Mt isa is one of the largest producers of both lead and silver, in the Western world. It is also home to a large Rodeo, held in August.

The Leichhardt River divides the town, with the town centre on the eastern side of the river, and the mining areas on the western side. You can find out more about mining in the area by joining one of the tours around the mine itself. You can either follow the underground tour which is really good, or if you don't feel brave enough follow the surface tour.

There are plenty of attractions around Mt Isa, with something for everyone. You can see various historical artifacts at the Frank Aston Museum, learn about the local Aboriginal community at the Kalkadoon Tribal Centre and Cultural Keeping Place, see a display of fossils at the Riversleigh Fossils Interpretive Centre, and learn about the School of Distance Education.

If you would prefer something more active, then head to Lake Moondarra, which is a boating lake. You can also join a tour from Mt Isa to the wonderful Lawn Hill National Park. Around Mt Isa there is a wide selection of accommodation, with several campsites and motels around the town. There are also a number of good restaurants, and some great pubs which often have live bands playing.
