Brisbane is a great place to cycle, with wonderful tracks near and along the river. If you get tired along the way you can always hop on a bus or the City Cat (avoiding rush hour when you won't be allowed on). In its early stages the city grew as the agricultural and mining industries grew, until it eventually developed into the cultural and cafe filled city that it is today.

Traveling in Queensland is very easy to arrange, there is a wide variety of transport options and the industry is very easy to access and work with. This is a very casual state - just the place for that perfect holiday break! Guided tours of the city's heritage sights as well as Brisbane's early colonial history are available and shopping tours. A program of free walks around all parts of Brisbane is detailed in the Brisbane City Council's "Brisbane For Pleasure" guide.

Coach services leave Brisbane on a daily basis to most regions of the state. The Brisbane Transit Centre is the hub of all forms of coach and rail transport for Brisbane city. Travel Agents and Tourist Information centres can assist you with any travel details that you may require.

Flights arrive at Brisbane Airport from many international locations. There are excellent bus operators who have a door to door service that departs from the city to airport and back on a regular basis or you can use the Airtrain.

A very competitive building sector and relatively low home and land prices mean that Brisbane real estate is much more affordable than Sydney and Melbourne, but just like the rest of Australia, the recent housing boom has sent Brisbane prices soaring, although the market has now settled right down (in fact, prices actuially fell 3 % in the March 2005 quarter and rose by only 1.5% in the June 2005 Quarter). In June 2002 there were more than 30 Brisbane suburbs with an average price house price of under $200,000 - in June 2003 there were only six and now there are virtually none. The median house price in Brisbane is now around $330,000 - compare this figure to Sydney ($696,000) and Queensland is still cheap. Owners should expect modest capital gains over the next 12 months and buyers can take respite in a market that is now simmering, as opposed to boiling.

A short drive from the city centre, Manly Harbour Village is an ideal point for discovering Moreton Bay. Fresh seafood is a specialty here, as in other Bayside suburbs such as Redcliffe, Shorncliffe, Sandgate and Cleveland to the south. Mt Cotton even has a winery.

The Brisbane central business district is situated in a curve of a river. Covering only 2.2 square kilometres, it is easily walkable. The central streets are named for members of the House of Hanover. Streets named after female members: — (Adelaide - Alice - Ann - Charlotte - Elizabeth - Margaret - Mary) run parallel to (Queen Street / Queen Street Mall - named in honour of Queen Victoria) - and perpendicular to Streets named after male members (Albert - Edward - George - William).

Brisbane has a lower inner-city population density compared with Australia's two largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, although constant population growth occurring in Brisbane is closing the gap between Brisbane and Melbourne. The lower population density reflects the fact that most of Brisbane's housing stock consists of detached houses. Early legislation decreed a minimum size for residential blocks resulting in few terrace houses being constructed in Brisbane.
