The Southern Tablelands town of Braidwood lies on the plateau above the South Coast, halfway between Canberra and coastal Batemans Bay on the Kings Highway. Nestled in rolling hills on the plateau above the Budawang Ranges, the scenery around this district is both beautiful and diverse. It is only an hour down the mountains to the coast or west to Canberra and less north to Goulburn on the Hume Highway.

Another quaint and historic townships that reflects the different eras of Australian history, Bungendore is situated only half an hour from Canberra, Queanbeyan, Goulburn or Braidwood. The town is popular with commuters from the Capital who settle here for the relaxed and scenic lifestyle.

The region has many natural and tourism attractions (such as the mysterious and sometimes foreboding Lake George) and is located on the plateau immediately above the coastal plain ( Clyde Coast ) described in other parts of this site.

Other towns and centres in the region include the historic Braidwood (where the film "Ned Kelly", starring Mick Jagger was filmed), Bungendore (adjacent to Canberra), Crookwell and Marulan.

The Southern Tablelands is distinguished by its wide open spaces and rolling hills. This is rural Australia personified and travelling through this region provides a sharp contrast to many of the other regions in the South East of NSW. Visitors to Australia should complement their coastal or city tours with a visit to this region in order to complete their picture of rural Australia.

The city of Goulburn is notable in many ways. Although recently bypassed, it is a major point on the Hume Highway which links Australia's two largest cities of Sydney and Melbourne. It is less than an hour from our nation's capital of Canberra via the Federal Highway and only a little over an hour from our wonderful south coast. It is also situated on the rail link between Sydney and Melbourne.

Most importantly, Goulburn has historically been central to Australia's finest wool growing region. Many restored and open historical buildings give an insight to the rise of Australia's oldest inland city and to its importance as the rural centre for one of our most important primary industries.
