The Tablelands is an area of strong landscapes, a fascinating mix of heritage towns and villages, stunning country gardens and beautiful waterways, not far from Sydney. As you move inland the coastal humidity is left behind and the gently undulating landscape becomes baked instead of steamed. Passing the white rubble moonscape atop Mount Hay, where you can stay at the van park and fossick for agates, the road loops over low hills before adopting a pattern that becomes ever more familiar: straight for miles and then an unexpected bend. Bottle trees, with their bulbous, thick grey trunks and spindly, thinly leaved branches, herald the drier climate.

Gradually, the deep blue platform of the Blackdown Tablelands emerges from the horizon, and, by the time you reach DINGO, dominates the landscape. Dingo is somewhere to stock up: there’s a hotel, van park and a bronze monument to the town’s namesake. Heading north towards Mackay, the Dingo–Mount Flora road is direct but uninteresting, skirting the eastern edge of the Bowen Basin's coal mines through fields of sunflowers and corn.
