Bankstown City is located in Sydney’s south western suburbs – between 13 and 23 kilometres south west of the Sydney GPO. The City is bounded by the City of Parramatta and the Municipalities of Auburn and Strathfield to the north, the Cities of Canterbury and Hurstville to the east, the City of Liverpool and Sutherland Shire to the south and the City of Fairfield to the west.

The City includes the suburbs of Bankstown, Bankstown Airport, Bass Hill, Birrong, Chester Hill, Chullora, Condell Park, East Hills, Georges Hall, Greenacre, Lansdowne, Milperra, Mount Lewis, Padstow, Padstow Heights, Panania, Picnic Point, Potts Hill, Punchbowl (part), Regents Park (part), Revesby, Revesby Heights, Sefton, Villawood (part) and Yagoona.

Bankstown is the oldest area of settlement within Bankstown City, with development occurring after the completion of the Great South Road (Hume Highway) in 1814. The area was named by Governor Hunter in 1797 in honour of Sir Joseph Banks the botanist. Bankstown today is a well established residential area that has experienced a significant increase in population from 1996 to 2001. This population growth has been driven by the addition of new dwellings in existing areas.

The region features sales assistants, storepersons, secretaries and personal assistants, and shop managers as the most significant occupations. The most notable industries include school education, other business services (including employment placement, contract staff and secretarial services, cleaning, pest control, security and auctioning), hospitals and nursing homes, and specialised food retailing.

There are other notable occupations and industries that employ fewer people, but form an unusually large share of the workforce compared to the Australian average. These occupations include printing machinists, small offset printers, and sewing machinists, while the industries include other transport equipment manufacturing (including ship and boat building, and railway equipment and aircraft manufacturing), and plastic product manufacturing.

Compared with the Australian average, this region has a significantly higher concentration of people employed as tradespersons and related workers and production and transport workers. The large share of work in these occupations relates to the large size of the local manufacturing base and wholesale trade employment.
