Rental Property & Holiday Accommodation

Woden Valley

Woden Valley is a district of Canberra, the capital city of Australia. In 1964 it was the first "satellite city" to be built, separate from the Central Canberra district. It has its own shopping centre, employment opportunities and accommodation with 13 suburbs arranged around the Woden Town Centre.

In 1971 a flood at Yarra Glen killed seven people. The drains and roads in the area have since been redesigned to avoid future flood casualties.

Woden Town Centre, town centre in the district of Woden in Canberra, Australia. The building of Woden was begun in the 1960s. Woden Town Centre is technically located within the Canberra suburb of Phillip, although it is thought of as being a town centre, not part of a suburb.

Woden has a main shopping mall, Westfield Woden which has department stores such as Harvey Norman, David Jones and BIG W, Hoyts cinemas and many other stores on several levels. Separate buildings house multistorey parking lots. There is a police station and public library nearby. Woden also has a large bus interchange for ACTION buses.

The tallest building in Canberra, the Lovett Tower is located at Woden. The Woden Town Park is located across Callam street, although infrequently used because of its location away from the major shopping areas. A number of other buildings are located in Woden; the Sirius Building, Scarborough House, Fishburn House, Juliana House and Albemarle Building.

The Department of Health and Ageing, Centrelink, the Department of Veterans Affairs and Intellectual Property Australia are all headquartered around the Woden Town Centre.

The ACT was established from land ceded by New South Wales in 1911. Initial development of the ACT was slow, and management of the existing NSW infrastructure was continued by the Commonwealth with only gradual changes. The last ‘freehold’ properties were not resumed until the 1980s. Names already in use in 1911, and these were mainly natural features and locality names, were retained. Although some localities, overtaken by urban development, have disappeared, their names have usually been retained in some form.

The City of Canberra was named by the Commonwealth Government in 1913. The name has local authenticity, being associated with the district since early settlement. Joshua Moore obtained a land grant in 1822 at Canberry on the Limestone Plains (the inner northern suburbs now occupy the Limestone Plains) and the explorer and naturalist John Lhotsky in 1834 referred to the area as "Kembery". The Government Gazette of 20 September 1928 listed Canberra as an Aboriginal name of doubtful meaning. However, the official explanation at the naming ceremony in 1913 was that Canberra was an Aboriginal name meaning, "meeting place".

The Australian Capital Territory stretches 88km from north to south and only 30km from west to east. The landscape around Canberra is made up of rugged plains, hills and mountains, as well as plenty of trees. This countryside leads into New South Wales from all directions, with most of the landscape being National Parks.

Canberra is home to Government, where you can visit Government House, Parliament House, Old Parliament House, The National Gallery of Australia and The Australian National Botanic Gardens. As well as offering a full range of culture and history the city also offers a lively entertainment scene, including its theatres and cinemas.

The city surrounds Lake Burley Griffin, a beautiful but artificial lake. The city is to the North of the lake, with the main road running through it being Northbourne Avenue. Off of this you will find the main shopping areas, banks, post offices and bus terminals.
